I've got to admit, I wasn't much of a fan of John Mayer's first album.. When he came out, unfortunately I didn't give him a chance because all I kept thinking was "Oh, it's Dave Matthews Redux".. ...Then "Heavier Things" came out.. a few songs really got to me and my attitude started changing.. ..THEN came 'TRY!".. I was blown away.. completely..
Because of this, I ran out and bought "Continuum" the first week it was out.. WOW..! I was so impressed right from the git-go..
Continuum is an album full of mid-to-slow tempo songs that never come off as ballady, cheesy, or over blown.. This album isn't blues, it isn't soul, it isn't soft-rock, it isn't pop rock.. this album IS John Mayer. It's him.. it's his heart, his soul.. It's one of those rare albums where we get to see the artists for what they truly are, and "Continuum" brings it all to the forefront.
Lyrically, the songs talk of his 'beliefs' surrounding politics, love, loss, growing old, happiness... Though all of that has been done before, here he conveys those emotions all with a sense of whit and humor sorely missing in most music.
Musically, we see that John is a natural. He has the uncanny ability that most guitarst can't do to make his guitar sing to you, make a statement.. Almost as if it's an extention of himself. But vocally, he has just as an important impact with his intimate tone which never sounds forced. The songs themselves are mid-tempo that border on the blues (just based on his gutiar style), but adding the funky laid back drumming of Steve Jordan and the solid melodic bass playing of Pino Paladino takes the songs to a groving commercially acceptable plain that all other blues artists don't realize they can go to. Add on top his pop vocal abilities, and you've got a very unique album..
In summation, it's great. The songwriting is great, lyrics, music, but above all, vocal and musical performances are what makes this album so important. I'm so thankful that this album exists in a time where musicians aren't actually musicians at all.. it's to show them that, well, they really don't know what they are doing.. so start learning! ;o)
Thank you, John.. for this album. Keep it up, you deserve everything that comes your way.. From one musician to another.. ;o)
All The Best,
The AndyMan!

This is an amazing CD, the voice, the music, the lyrics, 100% Soul
