CNR.. The Song ROCKS very hard, in imitation of The White Stripes bald guitar/drum sound that is so distinctive. Once again this is a Yankovic original however, and "CNR" is a crazy stomping freaked out thumping rant about the fictitious and way out abilities of the late actor Charles Nelson Reilly, a campy minor celebrity game show stalwart and tv personality who sadly passed away in 2007, but who, I feel sure, would have been very excited at being celebrated in such a manner by Weird Al! This is a direct spoof of the "Chuck Norris meme" No-one could have been less like an Action Hero than CNR!
No place again this time around for a bass guitar. Several of Weird Al's recent songs have followed this pattern.. Neither Craigslist, the Doors pastiche, nor Whatever You Like and White & Nerdy; both modern rap/hip hop parodies, have required the services of Al's genius bassist Steve Jay; this is a trend I hope will not continue long! The searing guitar sound, as ever provided by Jim Kimo West, is a stark contrast to his gentler solo projects, but exactly nails the White Stripes sound effortlessly
CNR's feats are intended to make you laugh and slightly gross you out I think, but it's nothing too shocking.
I get the impression (yet again) that Al is a little tired of his "family entertainer" image that he seems to have had thrust upon him over the years. I suppose it is inevitable that someone who has been doing this since the mid 1970s is going to find it hard to keep a cutting edge image when several generations are all following him together, but I can vouch for some pretty way out older people among his fanbase that are determined to grow older completely disgracefully.. We are all kids inside after all. Weird Al is a unique case of someone who is becoming ever cooler and more interestingly creative in what he does as time goes along. He never ceases to surprise me. I can often guess what he might do next, but can never anticipate the sheer brilliance or the crazy twists of his humour. "Weird Al" will always have the ability to surprise. The song is easy and fun to sing along to. There's a whole lot of fun and energy there to enjoy and includes a section that is not in the video, so you definitely need to get both for the full experience
