Daniel Merriweather Makes Solo Debut With 'Love And War'

May 21, 2009 - 1:00am
You may already be familiar with the powerhouse pipes of Daniel Merriweather. The 27-year-old Australian is the old-soul voice behind Mark Ronson's "Stop Me", which soared to the top of the UK charts in April 2007 and labeled Merriweather as an artist to watch.

Now Merriweather is making good on that promise and establishing himself as a singer, songwriter, and performer in his own right. On Tuesday, June 2, 2009, Merriweather will be stepping into the spotlight and releasing his own debut album, 'Love & War', which has already been named one of Rolling Stone's hottest albums of 2009.

"On Love & War, it's as if I took all of my influences, shook them up in a box, and came up with a bunch of songs that I think stand away from any one particular genre. Merriweather's writing on the album makes use of hip-hop beats, gospel organs, 60s soul horns, warm textures of acoustic and electric guitar, and string arrangements coupled with extensive production from Mark Ronson. The opening track, "For Your Money," finds Merriweather trying to survive everyday life in his adopted city of New York; "Change" advises people to look at themselves in the mirror before judging anyone else; and "Chainsaw" is about a destructive and dysfunctional relationship.
